The successor of the highly innovative Tamdakht Meteorite coin of 2016, the 2017 issue is a stunning progression of the breakthrough technology with an enhanced concave deformity and cracks. Dedicated to the Chergach Meteorite, the coin is made of ½ oz silver 999 with antique finish with the worldwide mintage of 2 500 pieces.
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Elizabeth II and the following inscriptions: the Queen’s name, the face value of the coin and its issuing country.
The reverse is intentionally overstruck, leading to cracks and even a desired breakthrough where the meteorite seemingly struck the coin. During this monitored destruction process, the break points occur at random, making each coin unique. The gilded finish is reminiscent of the Sahara Desert, where the chondrite meteorite was found ten years ago in July 2007 near Timbuktu. Naturally, a fragment of the actual meteorite rests in the crater depression.
