This breathtaking ruthenium and rose gold plated coin is the debut issue in the Eclipse of the Sun series and features a detailed image of a panda. Struck from 1 oz silver .999, the coin is a unique combination of black and gold: it’s completely plated with black ruthenium and partly with 24 kt rose gold! The worldwide mintage is limited to a mere 888 pieces.
The obverse of the coin features one of the greatest Chinese architectural and historic wonders, the Temple of Heaven. It was built to celebrate the Harvest Ceremonies of Winter Solstice; the fabulous temple was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
The black ruthenium reverse features the gilded image of a panda, the iconic animal to China, inhabiting the mountainous temperate forests on the south west of the country. Unfortunately, these charming black-and-white bears are now considered as a critically endangered species – there are about 1,600 left in the wild. This is the result of human destruction of their forest habitat combined with poaching. To achieve the unusual black surface of the coin, it was coated with silver-gray ruthenium, one of the platinum metals that looks like platinum but is rarer. Housed in a luxury wooden box, the new panda coin is a desirable collector’s item!
