The Cutty Sark’s extraordinary name comes from a poem by Robert Burns called “Tam O’Shanter” and means “short shirt” in Scottish. In this poem, the main character is pursuited by witches, the fastest and the most beautiful and seductive was the witch dressed in a linen nightgown (sark), which was given to her when she was a little girl, and this explains the fact that the shirt was too short (cutty) for her. Despite that the “short shirt” is untypical name for sailing ships, it must be admitted that it is rather suitable for this slender and fast tea clipper, surrounded with an aura of magic and mystery.
