A tiny dot in the South Atlantic Ocean, Ascension Island is a unique sub-tropical volcanic island with beautiful beaches and the lush vegetation of Green Mountain. It was discovered on Ascension Day 1501 by a Portuguese navigator Joao da Nova, hence the name. Rich in wildlife and picturesque landscapes, Ascension Island is a popular stop off point for cruise passengers, making tourism an important part of the island’s economy.
Being part of a British Overseas Territory under the sovereignty of the British Crown, Ascension has issued its own commemorative coins since 1978. Its high quality royal-themed coins have earned their international renown.
