Transnistria, also known as the 'Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic', is an unrecognized country hidden behind the border between Moldova and Ukraine. The name 'Transnistria' comes from 'Trans Dniester': a reference to the River Dniester. In 1990, this narrow strip of land between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border proclaimed its independence from Moldova. Despite having its own constitution, currency and army, Transnistria isn’t recognized by any other sovereign nation. It contains most of Moldova's industrial infrastructure, but the economic potential is limited by its international isolation.

As a modern coin issuer, the country is known for its unique Lunar coins dedicated to the animals of the Chinese Zodiac calendar.
