This impressive silver coin belongs the “Golden Five” series, which became a bestseller and was released in 2018 in connection with the 100th anniversary of the death of Gustav Klimt. It is dedicated to “Music” – a famous painting by Gustav Klimt.
“Music” is a symbolist oil on canvas painting created by Gustav Klimt in 1895. Now it is stored at the Neue Pinakothek in Germany.
The idea of synthesizing methods of music, painting and literature permeates all the creative practices of symbolism, to which many artists of the era of the turn of the century addressed. This fate did not pass and the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, in the paintings of which (“Music” in 1895, the cycle “Beethoven Frieze”) clearly shows interest in art as a means of re-creating, evolving the world.
“Music” depicts a young Greek woman playing the lyre, in whose guise the features of a modern Klimt resident of Vienna are guessed. Contrast – the main compositional feature of this canvas. It can be seen, for example, in the deliberate opposition of the dark dress of the girl and the bright appearance of the instrument. In turn, the picture space, which depicts a Greek woman surrounded by bizarre patterns that resemble notes from afar, comes in contrast with the emphasized emptiness of the other plans. On both sides are stone images of the demon of fertility Silenus and the Sphinx.
Despite the fact that “Music” refers to the early works of the artist, it already shows the features of Klimt’s mature manner: the use of two-dimensional space, a specific colour spectrum. This creates an indescribable feeling of transcendence, the unreality of the image, which is so attracted to the paintings of this artist. Music was decorative and allegorical. The sphinx is a symbol of artistic freedom, whereas the lyre is a symbol of music. A satyr’s mask hidden on the left stands for fertility, whereas the lion’s teeth at the centre denote the spread of new ideas.
This coin is the last one in the “Golden Five” series. It is made from the finest silver and is decorated with the Baltic Gold – Polish amber.
The reverse of the coin contains a wonderful coloured image of the “Music” painting. On the left of the coin, there is a beautiful amber insert. The obverse of the coin features the Coat of Arms of Cameroon. The mintage is limited to 555 pieces for global distribution.
If you are a true connoisseur of art, it is a must-have coin to your collection.
