Although he later became famous around the globe, his life was rather difficult because he had a mental illness and remained poor and virtually unknown during his life. To his cultural heritage belong more than 2,100 works, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings, and sketches. Within a decade, Vincent van Gogh created more than 43 self-portraits. Among them, there are both paintings and drawings. The self-portrait that this collectible coin is directly based on was created in spring 1887. It was painted with oil on pasteboard in Paris, France.

The reverse of the coin contains a wonderful and detailed image of Van Gogh that was taken from one of his self-portraits. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
