This unique 100 g silver coin is created to commemorate a special historical moment – 600 years of Imperial Palace that is the home of China’s last emperor located in central Beijing. 2020 is the 600th anniversary of the foundation of the Forbidden City – the most distinctive Chinese-style architectural structure.

Do you know why this palace complex is called Forbidden? Previously it was considered as a divine place and thus was certainly forbidden to ordinary people. It houses the Palace Museum and was the former Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty (as it was constructed in 1420) to the end of the Qing dynasty. The Forbidden City is China's best-preserved imperial palace and at the same time, the largest ancient palatial structure in the world.

The Taihe Palace of the Forbidden City is located in the center of the Forbidden City. It is the first of the three palaces. The exquisite coiled dragon caisson ceiling in the hall is China's most imperial building structure. The caisson ceiling of Taihe Palace is located in the middle of the main hall. It is divided into upper, middle, and lower layers. The upper one is round caisson, the lower one is square caisson, and the middle is octagonal caisson. This design embodies China's traditional saying of “Heaven above and on earth” and “Round sky and square earth”. There is a golden dragon carved that bow and look down from caisson ceiling, with a Hsuan-yuen mirror in mouth, the carving is fine. It contrasts with the golden dragon on the giant pillar in the hall, which further highlights the solemnity and luxury of the imperial palace.

The coin has 3D Concave Relief that makes it so one-of-a-kind. The reverse of the coin depicts the Forbidden City – the palatial heart of China. Small and incredible details are here to highlight every part of the Forbidden City. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
