Struck from .925 silver with the mintage of 7 000 pieces worldwide, this 10-Hryvnia commemorative coin of Ukraine continues the Flora and Fauna series. The coin is dedicated to the sterlet, an endangered species of sturgeon usually found in deep river basins with clean flowing water.

The obverse features and the following insciprions: ‘the National Bank of Ukraine’, the face value of the coin, its weight, metal fineness and issuing year. They are surrounded by a wreath made up from the images of different representatives of Ukrainian flora and fauna.

The reverse of the coin depicts a freshwater sterlet against the background imitating the sandy bottom. Also known as Acipenser ruthenus, the smallest species of sturgeon lives entirely in freshwater and unlike other sturgeons does not migrate from the Black Sea. This large prehistoric-looking fish has rows of heavy plates along its sides and dorsal area as well as a tail resembling that of a shark. Freshwater sterlets can grow to about 4' long and can live over 20 years. The names of the species in Latin and Ukrainian are indicated along the rim of the coin.
