Struck from .925 silver with the mintage of 7 000 pieces worldwide, this 10-Hryvnia commemorative coin of Ukraine continues the Architectural monuments of Ukraine series. The silver coin in proof quality  is dedicated to Zhovkva Synagogue, one of the largest Renaissance defensive structures in Europe and one of the key buildings in the town of Zhovkva (about a 40 minute drive northwest of Lviv, Ukraine).

The obverse features a fragment of the synagogue building façade surrounded by ornamental patterns. There is also the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine and the following insciprions: ‘the National Bank of Ukraine’, the face value of the coin and its issuing year.

The reverse of the coin depicts Zhovkva Synagogue against the background of a building plan. Built in the 1690s for a rapidly growing Jewish community, it is an excellent example of a fortress synagogue with a late-Renaissance appearance and baroque additions. Zhovkva Synagogue was included in the 2000 World Monuments Watch. In 2001, WMF’s Jewish Heritage Program supported archaeological exploration and the development of a restoration plan for this monument of the Judaic sacral architecture and the defensive works. The name of the coin is also indicated on the reverse.
