The given splendid 2 oz silver coin is the second release in the “Great Commanders” series. This series is devoted to people who became the greatest commanders in world history. In this case, the coin portraits the ancient Spartan King Leonidas.
The reverse of the coin features Leonidas leading his army and the hoplites fighting in their tight phalanx formation. The Spartan king Leonidas is in full battle attire with his army behind him, and a few Persian warriors in front. Some details of the coin are emphasized by red-gold plating with the aim of reproducing the blood poured in battle. The obverse of the coin displays a small image of the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, completely surrounded by a detailed map featuring the Pass of Thermopylae.
The coin is unique because its design is so striking that looking at the map helps us to visualize this decisive historic battle. This coin is exceptionally well-produced and greatly depicts one of the finest of ancient battle scenes to be found on a bullion coin design.
An outstanding souvenir for all history lovers and the most demanding coin collectors!
