In 2008, Macau started a series of splendid coins dedicated to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The latest additions to the highly popular and artistic coins are those dedicated to the Year of the Monkey. Struck with the mintage of 8 000 pieces worldwide, this coin is a 1 oz piece of silver with a beautiful proof finish and striking vivid colors.
The obverse of the coin features the detailed image of the Museum of Holy House of Mercy established by the first ever organization of charity in Macau. The image comes surrounded by three inscriptions standing for the name of the building in English, Chinese and Portuguese.
The centerpiece of the reverse is a well-defined silhouette outlining the fine details of the monkey’s body, flanked by a fringe of brilliantly-hued blossom. According to the ancient Chinese zodiac, human character is interpreted not by the month, but rather by the lunar year of birth. The Chinese believe that people born in the year of the monkey are astute, intelligent and flexible which enables them to solve problems with ease. The left side of the coin reverse with the brilliant proof shine of pure .999 silver contains several inscriptions in English and Chinese indicating the face value of the coin, its issuing country and year. A great gift for someone born in 2016 or any other Monkey year!
