The fifth issue in the captivating Butterflies series of silver coins bears the title “Goliath Birdwing” and is dedicated to one of the largest butterflies in the world inhabiting the tropical rainforests of Papua New Guinea.
The obverse of this silver butterfly coin represents the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Around the effigy, there are the inscriptions indicating the Queen’s name and the face value of the Niue coin. There are also the legends denoting the name of the issuing country and the issuing year against the background of a stylized enlarged piece of a butterfly wing.
Revealed on the reverse, there is an excellently crafted colored the Goliath Birdwing butterfly against the background of the rainforest. This butterfly got its name due to its large wings that can measure up to 11 inches in diameter and the bird-like style in which it flies. Thanks to the pad printing technique the image on the coin displays the genuine colors of the butterfly. To the right of the image, there is the inscription denoting the Latin name of the insect.
