The convex obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Elizabeth II surrounded by the following inscriptions: the Queen’s name, the coin’s issuing year and country. Among the other legends, there are: the name of the coin, its face value and metal fineness.
Notable for its unique lava inlay, the reverse is more like a caldera of Erta Ale, than a coin side. It is one of the few volcanoes in the world to have an almost persistent lava lake. The latter has been active during most of the time since it was first discovered in 1960s. Known as one of the driest, lowest, and hottest places on Earth, this constantly active basaltic shield volcano is 2,011-feet high.
