This is the first coin in the “SOS to the World – They are gone!” series depicting animals that once lived on our planet in order to prevent the endangered ones from disappearing. Each coin in the series is a stunning combination of three decorative techniques: microprinting, laser techniques and digital printing. Struck from 17,5 g silver 999 proof, the Haast’s Eagle coin has got the limited mintage – only 999 pieces worldwide.
The obverse of the Niue coin traditionally bears the effigy of Her Majesty Elizabeth II surrounded by the following inscriptions: the Queen’s name, the face value of the coin, its metal fineness, issuing country and year.
In the center of the reverse, there is an image of the Haast’s Eagle in relief. The upper part of the coin includes the century, in which the species became extinct and a map with a marked area of the species occurrence, made with the use of a laser technique. In the background, there is a fairy-tale-like landscape of New Zealand created with the use of UV printing. The bird that once lived in New Zealand, Haast’s Eagle was the heaviest eagle ever known to have existed, even bigger than today’s vultures, with large tiger-like talons. It had huge wings which spanned up to 3 m and weighed as much as 15 kg.
