This is the tenth coin to be released in the O Canada 1/2 oz. silver coin series. The eye-catching coin has been struck in 99.99% fine silver and enhanced with the image of an orca, the largest of the dolphins and one of the world's most powerful predators. The worldwide mintage is 40 000 pieces.
The portrait of Her Majesty Elizabeth II is represented on the obverse of the silver proof coin. Along the rim of the coin, there are the inscriptions indicating the Queen’s name and the Latin title meaning By the Grace of God, Queen.
The reverse is distinguished by the image of a powerful breaching orca in splendid detail against the background of the Canada's Northwest Pacific coast. These toothed black and white animals, often referred to as killer whales and wolves of the sea, hunt everything from fish to walruses, seals, penguins, squid, sea turtles, sharks and even other kinds of whales making up to 500 pounds of food a day. Once in three to ten years, after a 17-month pregnancy, Orca females give birth to a calf measuring about eight feet and weighing 400 pounds. These animals produce a wide variety of communicative sounds easily recognized by other orcas even at a distance. This 1/2 oz Canadian coin will make a nice gift for nature lovers and a great addition to a collection featuring the amazing world of wildlife.
